MIKENET Passwords

SMC has strong procedures to protect Mikenet users and college data. These "password ground-rules" align us with best data /network security practices and brings us into compliance with audit recommendations. All Mikenet users will be required to change their passwords every 120 days. This process does not impact your KnightVision or Datatel passwords.

User Impact:

When your password is due to expire, you will receive a prompt at login (either from your college-owned computer or, if you are logging into email through SMCmail on the web, on your own computer).   Follow the on-screen prompts to change your password.

J  If you’d like to beat the rush and change your password BEFORE you’re prompted to do so, follow these directions:

If you’re working on a college-owned computer, hold down CTRL and ALT while pressing DEL.  Choose “Change Password”, type in your old password, then your new password, then confirm the new password.  Click okay and you’re done.

If you’re working from home or on a non-college-owned computer, go to https://smcmail.smcvt.edu and log in with your current password.  From the menu, select Options, then Change Password.  Follow the directions on the screen to change your password.

 Password Rules:
  • Passwords must be at least 6 characters long and contain no more than 28 characters
  • Passwords cannot contain all or part of your Mikenet name or full name
  • Your last 3 passwords cannot be reused; simply changing the case of one or more letters doesn’t satisfy this rule (e.g., Password1 is viewed the same as PASSword1)
  • Your password must contain characters from at least 3 of the 4 categories listed here:
  1. Uppercase letters (A through Z)
  2. Lowercase letters (a through z)
  3. Numeric characters (0 through 9)
  4. Special  characters (!@#$%^&*()_+)

Remember - Pick a password that you’ll remember.  Don’t write your password down on a sticky note and attach it to your computer monitor! L

To Report Problems:

Please call x2020 or stop by the Helpdesk in SE 221 in person, as we are unable to change passwords via email.  When calling the Helpdesk for a password-related problem, please be prepared to give us your SMC ID#, which is found on the front of your SMC ID card.  (Our Helpdesk is required to have this number before we can reset your password.)    Please note that passwords can only be reset during normal IT Helpdesk hours: Monday-Friday between 8:00AM and 5:00PM.
